Don't Look Up (2021)

An uncomfortable satire

So this is a quick review about Netflix's latest blockbuster, Don't Look Up. This could be described in one single question/premise, "How could we portray the modern digital world in the most ironic, exaggerated, and self-awareness ?".

The film follows the path of Dr. Mindy (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his Ph.D. Candidate Kate Debiasky (Jennifer Lawrence) trying to alert the US (the whole planet earth to their eyes) about the existence of a planet-killer comet that will hit the earth in less than 7 months, showing in the process how little the world can care about facts over profit. This is the reason why the outcome is quite distant from the one you'd expect from a Hollywood movie about saving the earth from extinction, as far as Adam McKay takes every chance he gets to mock modern society and how the government faces a worldwide crisis. As this may sound, you can expect to drop an uneasy laugh now and then after being shown to your own eyes that same situation you just experienced a few moments ago, for example being tracked by a multi-million company or letting the media decide the tone of an entire problematic leaving you with a bitter taste in your mouth.

The result at the end of this enormous satire is a dejected head shake as it looks like the film is also mocking you in the sense that it is so ridiculous and self-aware about the problematic topics it talks about that the director doesn't even try to hide the jokes anymore, and you can't stop them, and you wouldn't stop them, you realize the viewer is merely watching the sequence of events knowing how are going to happen without doing anything. Anyone that catches any of the problems shown and laughs about without any sign of reflection is merely another part of the big joke Don't look up makes about the world. I would recommend it if you want to be a part of the conversation or are in the mood for a big dose of irony with no pushing back in modern era clichés.
